Common Drainage Problems and What to Do about Them
Poor drainage is an issue that many homeowners face. When water doesn’t drain properly, it can leave parts of the yard flooded and even allow water to seep into the basement or foundation. Here are some key things you should know about drainage issues and the best outdoor drainage solutions.
Sources of Poor Drainage
The ground in a yard needs to be gradually sloped so that water can flow away from a house. If the pitch, or the angle of the slope, is too shallow, or if there is a large depression, water can collect and flood the yard or basement.
Gutters and downspouts are supposed to carry water away from a house to prevent foundation damage and flooding in the yard. If they aren’t installed and angled correctly, water can instead pool in the yard and get into the basement.
How to Deal with Poor Drainage
One solution is to install a French drain. Landscapers can dig a ditch, insert a perforated pipe, and cover it with gravel. Water can enter the pipe and get carried away to a more desirable location.
A channel drain, which is also called a trench drain, carries water underground and disperses it over a large area. This can be a good solution if water tends to collect in a place where people frequently walk or drive, such as on a patio or walkway or in the driveway.
A catch basin consists of an underground container that collects water. A grate on top lets water pass through but keeps leaves and other solid objects out. Pipes carry the water away to a better location.
A drywell can help water seep into the soil instead of collecting on the surface. A drywell is buried underground at the lowest point on the property. Water collects in the drywell and gradually penetrates the soil.
